Leona Klumb, 96, Mitchell, died Sunday, September 30, 2018 at the Good Samaritan Society in Corsica.
Funeral services will be 10:00 am Friday, October 5 at St. John Lutheran Church at rural Dimock. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Visitation will be from 6-8:00 pm Thursday at the Bittner Funeral Chapel in Mitchell.
Leona Gertrude Klumb was born March 24, 1922 to Herman and Hattie (Moeschner) Goldammer in Mitchell, SD. She grew up on the family farm a mile south of town with her sister Dorothy and her parents and grandparents. After graduating from Mitchell High School she worked in a bakery where she perfected her baking skills. Her pies were the best.
She met the love of her life, Lavern Klumb, in 1948 and they were married on August 1st of that year at Zion Lutheran Church in Mitchell. They had three sons, Wesley, Mark, and Scott. Lavern and Leona farmed southwest of Mitchell for 66 years and she loved farm life. She was Lavern’s right hand woman, helping him with everything that needed to be done on the farm. She enjoyed gardening, growing the most beautiful irises, and also loved to paint. The masterpieces she created will be treasured.
Her relationship with God was always very important to her. She was baptized and confirmed at Zion Lutheran Church. After she moved out to the farm southwest of Mitchell, she devoted herself to service at St. John’s Lutheran Church in rural Dimock. She taught Sunday school for 8 years, led the choir for 14 years, and was an active member of Lutheran Women. She loved making quilts for missions and banners to decorate the church.
Although Psalm 139 was her favorite of the many passages she had underlined in her Bible, she said “I loved all of them – they told me about myself – like my ways are not always God’s ways. Love is so important. I try to serve others before myself and help them.” Leona exemplified this her whole life.
She will be remembered and missed greatly by her sister Dorothy (Bill) Puder, Casper, WY; her son Mark (Rebecca), Mt. Vernon, SD; her grandchildren Travis (Greta), Knoxville, TN, Joshua (Sadie), Anessa, Mariah (Eric) Knight, Natasha, Micah, Mt. Vernon, SD, and Jeremiah (Anastasia), Dubuque, IA; her great-grandchildren Xander, Avery, and Wyatt; and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her baby sister Marie, her husband Lavern, and her sons Wesley and Scott.
