Gerhard Storm, 99, Mitchell, died Tuesday, September 18, 2018 at Avera Brady Health and Rehab.
Funeral services will be 10:00 am Saturday, September 22 at the Trinity Lutheran Church in Mitchell. Burial with military honors will be in St. John Lutheran Cemetery at rural Dimock. Visitation will be from 5-7:00 pm on Friday with a prayer service at 7:00 pm at the Trinity Lutheran Church. Arrangements are with the Bittner Funeral Chapel in Mitchell.
Gerhard Storm was born March 26, 1919, to Gustav and Martha (Sperlich) Storm in Douglas County. He was baptized and confirmed at St. John Lutheran Church, Dimock. In his youth he attended country grade school and worked on the farm for his parents and neighbors. In January 1941 he was drafted into the United States Army and entered the service in March 1941. He served in the 135th Infantry Regiment Unit attached to the 34th “Red Bull” Division. Gerhard served in the North Africa and Italy campaigns and earned the Combat Medic Badge. In May 1945, after V-E Day he was sent home and honorably discharged. On September 12, 1945, he married Lorraine Olawsky at St. John Lutheran Church. They farmed 11 miles west of Ethan. Gerhard was an ambitious farmer and often utilized new farming practices. While he farmed he also sold insurance, silos, and feeding equipment. Not to be all work, he took time out of busy farm life for weekly bowling. After Gerhard and Lorraine moved to Mitchell in 1978 he started golfing. He continued to bowl and golf into his nineties. He never missed daily coffee time with the guys. Throughout his life, Gerhard was active in the church, including serving as church president, first at St. John Lutheran Church, Dimock, and later at Trinity Lutheran Church. He also served on various boards in the community.
Gerhard is survived by his wife of 73 years, Lorraine, 6 children and their spouses, Carolyn and Stuart Doescher, Brandon, Glenn and Lois Storm, Corsica, Chuck and Dee Storm, Mitchell, Kathy and Chuck Olsen, Yankton, Ken and Nola Storm, Fargo, ND, and Jacque and Fred Baatz, Pierre, sixteen grandchildren, twenty-eight great grandchildren, and his sister, Doris Gerlach.
He was preceded in death by his parents and siblings, Albert Storm, Agnes Isaak, Bertha Diebner, Sophie Goldammer, Otto Storm, Erna Goldammer, Arthur Storm (in infancy), Leonard Storm, and Lawrence Storm.
