Betty Ann Osterloo

February 2, 1932 - April 3, 2018

Betty Ann Osterloo was born on February 2, 1932 to Theodore and Anna (Klunder) Folkerts in Hanson County, SD.  She grew up and lived in the Emery area most of her life.  On June 26, 1951 she married Byron Osterloo and to this union four boys and seven girls were born.  Betty accepted Jesus Christ as her personal savior on October 14, 1964 and was baptized into the church on March 27, 1965.  In the summer of 2016, she moved to Countryside Living in Mitchell, SD.  From there she moved to Avera Brady Health and Rehab Center where she resided until her death on April 3, 2018 at the age of 86.

Betty was a gentle spirit who loved to nurture others.  In addition to being a loving mother, she cared for the elderly ladies in her community by driving them to appointments and styling their hair.  After retiring as a cook for the Emery school system, Betty took great pleasure in volunteering at the Diamond Care Center in Bridgewater, SD.

In her spare time, she enjoyed sewing, quilting, growing flowers and baking hundreds of pies for the Clay County Fair in Spencer, IA.  Playing games with her children, grandchildren and numerous friends brought out a mischievous twinkle in her eye, and she had a laugh that was infectious.

She will be greatly missed by her 11 children: Vernon (Bergie) Osterloo, Lucy (Dale) Steilen, Patricia (Shawn) Murtha, Della (Matt) Krier, Susan (Jerry) Olinger, Jon (Nancy) Osterloo, Joan (Daryl) Janssen, Janene (Bartt) Nicholson, Beth (Tom) Wethor, George (Kristy) Osterloo and Harlan (Kristie) Osterloo;  27 grandchildren with 33 great-grandchildren: Leah (Brad) Callahan – Lydia, Everett and Porter;  Tim (Kelli) Osterloo; Paige (Jordan) Kadlec;  Brian Steilen – Mason, Breckin, Kenadie and Kooper; Kristi (Chris) Mattke – Lanah, Cydnee and Malorie; Jerod (Nikki) Steilen – Isaac and Jered; Ann (Jason) Carpenter – McKenna and Hadley; Michael Hettinger – Emma and Grayson; Heather (Seth) Williams – Wesley; Eric (Lynsie) Krier – Jadyn and Jackson; Steven Olinger; Tony (Marie) Olinger – Reid, Evy and Layne; Kari (Travis) Kampshoff – Ellie, Ethan and Elise; Laura (Nick) Wenande – Emery and Adler; Tyler Osterloo, Josh (Becky) Janssen – Braxton and Lucas; Andy Janssen; Mark Janssen; Kaylla Nicholson; Jacob Nicholson; Alex (Jimi) Wethor – Graham and Nora; Holly Wethor – MacKinzi and Brooke; Jonathan Wethor; Allyson Osterloo; Byron Osterloo; Morgan Osterloo; Sam Osterloo; her brother Wendell (Meridel) Folkerts and her sister Marie Bahmuller; brother-in-law Don Fluth;  sisters-in-law Barbara Osterloo and Lila Osterloo.

She was preceded in death by her husband Byron, a granddaughter Erica Osterloo, and two sisters Alyce Fluth and Elaine Browen.

A private family service will be held with interment in the Emery Community Cemetery.

Memorials may be sent to Avera Hospice @ Home.

Just now read about Betty's passing. Your mom was one of the sweetest women I've ever had the pleasure of meeting. Her laughter was infectious. Her hugs were so comforting. Her spirit was so precious. She was a favorite Sunday School teacher of mine and I felt truly blessed to reconnect with her when my mom passed away in 2007. I know mom and dad (Stanley and Phyllis Ontjes) loved her and your family. Dad would also chuckle about your large family when we would be driving home from having had a meal with your family. It was a privilege to know your mom.

Betty was a real sweetheart! They were good neighbors. Terry would have ,many talks with Byron when Betty and I were waiting for them for dinner or supper. They would meet on the road and visit. Betty made wonderful cinnamon rolls and share with us. lMany Prayers to you all as we know the whole family and enjoy you all!. At this time of sadness may you all have wonderful memories of your parents and know you have something very special that is left for you and that is family. You never know what tomorrow will bring. Sympathy to you all!.

My Mother did a multitude of great deeds throughout her life that has not been properly represented by her obituary. Also , she made thousands of pies at the Clay County Fair...not just hundreds.

It's been a privilege to know Betty and see her caring heart. I don't remember her helping Mom when I was small but was told of it. I did see her caring for my Grandma Janssen as she became less and less able to care for herself. I'm thankful she had Joan because she has been such a perfect partner to Daryl and a loving part of our family. I guess you got that from your Mom, Joanie!

One of the bright lights of our Stonecroft Bible study group for a few years in Emery! So grateful to know she knew the Saviour and we will meet again in the resurrection to eternal life. Sympathy to all her beloved family.
