Steven E. Nordwall

October 22, 1946 - February 26, 2018

Steve Nordwall, 71, beloved husband of Sherry Stilley, died on Monday, February 26, 2018 surrounded by loved ones at Avera Heart Hospital in Sioux Falls.

Funeral services will be 11:00 AM Saturday, March 3, at Congregational United Church of Christ in Mitchell.  Visitation will be from 5-7:00 PM Friday at the Bittner Funeral Chapel in Mitchell with a prayer service at 7:00 PM.

Steve was born October 22, 1946 in Minot, N.D., the oldest of two boys born to Earl and Betty (Snider) Nordwall.  He grew up on a farm near Garrison, ND and graduated from high school there in 1965.  Steve joined the US Air Force in June of 1966.  He was trained in electronic communications, a career he loved and continued until his death.  His first duty station was South Korea.  After that tour, he volunteered for duty at Grand Forks Air Force Base, ND.  Request granted, as nobody requested duty there.  He serviced equipment at the Minuteman Missile sites.  He completed his service in 1968. Steve married Melinda Allen in 1970 to which union son Doug Nordwall was born.  When that marriage ended, he returned to the University of North Dakota in Grand Forks.  In 1980 he moved to Sioux Falls, SD and worked at Gourleys.

Steve was united in marriage to Sherry Stilley in Mitchell in 1984, and gained 2 loving daughters, Solvei and April.  He worked at Mobile Electronics in Sioux Falls and commuted for 21 years.  In 2005, Steve went to work for the SD Bureau of Information and Telecommunications with his office in Mitchell where he continued working until his death.

Steve’s hobbies included hunting, fishing, archery, sailing, camping, canoeing, pulling water-skiers, pontooning, hot air balloon crewing, dogs, and traveling.  He was an active member of the Congregational UCC, had served as moderator and led Men’s Fellowship, and organized Pheasant Hunter’s Breakfasts for 12 years.  He was a 27 year member of Sons of Norway, and had traveled to Norway about 16 times to visit daughter April and family.  Steve and Sherry also traveled to Sweden, Greece and Canada.  Steve enjoyed news, musicals, theater, and he once played a Santa in “Miracle on 34th St.” He was intelligent, diligent, caring, thoughtful, open to new ideas, and always willing to help.  He loved spending time with family, especially his four grandchildren.

He is lovingly remembered by his wife Sherry Stilley;  son Doug, (Mahin Hackler) and grandson Gus of Richland, WA;  step daughters:  Solvei (Russ) Stedman of Sioux Falls, SD and April Stilley (Johannes Holmen) and grandchildren Katarina, Alexandra and Georg of Oslo, Norway;  brother Blaine (Paula) Nordwall of Bismarck, ND.; niece Emily (Justin) Henricksen and children: Claire, Bob and Lucy.  Brother–in-law Ward (Marion) Stenson, and many other loving family and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents and nephew Joshua Nordwall.

Memorials may be made to Congregational United Church of Christ, Mitchell.

I am so sorry about Steve. I've known Steve for nearly 50 years. Steve taught me to not take life seriously. That is the gift he left for my family. What a great guy he was! The world is a little darker now. My hugs to you, the girls, and Doug, Sherry. Know that he leaves a great legacy! Even with this sad news, I cannot help but smile when I think of him!

I have the pleasure of working with Steve at two different companies also did a few seminars and spent time up at the lake. Too many good memories to share including waterskiing eating is fantastic turkey smoked all day in this Weber charcoal grill. Unfortunately on his last change of work I had lost touch but I always thought if I saw him again we would pick up like we had never been apart. Occasionally gave you a hard time Steve but knew that you were good guy. RIP
