Merle Heiman

Merle Heiman, 78, Emery, SD died Sunday, November 19, 2017 at Covington Care Center in Sioux Falls.

Funeral services will be 10:30 am Saturday, November 25 at the Zion Lutheran Church in Bridgewater, SD. Burial will be in the Pleasant Prairie Cemetery at rural Bridgewater. Visitation will be from 5-7:00 pm Friday at the Hettinger-Bittner Funeral Chapel in Emery.

Merle Oscar Heiman was born July 19, 1939 on the family farm near Emery to Oscar and Rose (Schillinger) Heiman and was baptized at St John’s Lutheran Church on August 20, 1939. Merle attended and graduated from Emery High School in 1958. He served with the Army National Guard until 1964 while working on the family farm. On October 21, 1966 he married Lois Anderson of Bridgewater and they raised four children, Brian, Terisa, Mark, and Rich.

Merle had many occupations during his life, aside from working on the farm.    His passions included hunting, fishing, spending time with family and friends and gathering at the Bull Head Lounge. 

Those left to cherish his memory are: his wife Lois, three sons: Brian (Jenny) Heiman of Sioux Falls, Mark Heiman of Sioux Falls, Rich (Karen) Heiman of Canistota, one daughter, Terisa Heiman of Kansas City, Mo, four grandchildren: Jordan, Christine, Jason and Ashley Heiman, one brother, Rodney (Theresa) Heiman of Sioux Falls, three sisters: Rosie Schulz of Maynard, MN, LaVonne Nelson of Bartlett, TN, Joyce (Dallas) Laffey of Tripp, two brothers-in-law: Alvin Plagmann of Alexandria and Ron Mattice of Sioux Falls and numerous nephews and nieces.

Merle was preceded in death by his parents: Oscar and Rose Heiman: two sisters: Delores Plagmann and Darlene Mattice and two brothers-in-law: Herman Schultz and Jim Buehler.

I'm so sorry to learn of Merle's passing. Merle was a high school classmate of mine. I also was at Covington Heights and had my brother, Larry and my son, Trent take me in a wheelchair to visit Merle. It was that Sunday evening we learned of his passing. I was in rehab for a fractured hip and couldn't get around earlier. You have my sincere sympathy and prayers as you adjust to your loss.
