Donald Richter, 71, of Sioux Falls, SD died Friday, October 27, 2017, at the VA Medical Center in Sioux Falls. Funeral services will be 10:30 AM Wednesday, November 1, 2017 at the Bittner Funeral Chapel. Burial will be at Servicemen’s Memorial Cemetery in Mitchell.
Donald James Richter was born May 29, 1946 in Jamestown, North Dakota to Wilfred and Lillian (Grueneich) Richter. He attended school in Hecla, South Dakota. After graduating high school, he went into the Air Force serving 4 years at Mountain Home Air Force Base in Idaho and one year overseas in Saigon, Viet Nam. Upon returning from the service, he attended and earned degrees from Wahpeton State School of Science and Valley City State University. He lived in Sioux Falls until his health needs took him to Stoney Brook Suites Assisted Living in Sioux Falls and later Fellowship Village in Inwood, Iowa.
Don enjoyed watching all sports, but especially the Kansas City Chiefs and the Minnesota Twins. He was fortunate to be at Target Field in the Twin Cities on September 11, 2016, where he was honored on the Jumbotron for his 54 years of being a Twins fan and a Veteran. He loved visits from his family, especially the little kids.
Don is survived by his two sisters Marilyn Joyce, (Steve), Sioux City, Iowa and Kathy Hardie (Randy), Canton, South Dakota; a brother, Brad Richter (Nancy), Mahtomedi, Minnesota, and many nieces, nephews, and great-nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents Wilfred and Lillian Richter.
In lieu of flowers, the family is establishing a memorial fund at Fellowship Village in Inwood, Iowa.
