Dr. Carl J. Harberts, 88, Emery, SD died unexpectedly at his home on Tuesday, October 10, 2017.
Funeral services will be 10:30 am Saturday, October 14 at Trinity Lutheran Church in Spencer, SD. Burial will be in the Emery Community Cemetery. Visitation will be from 5-7:00 pm Friday with a prayer service at 7:00 pm at the church in Spencer.
Arrangements are with the Hettinger-Bittner Funeral Chapel in Emery.
Carl J. Harberts was born March 24, 1929, in Worthington, MN, to Theodore and Lillie (Paulsen) Harberts. He graduated from Worthington High School and attended Worthington Jr. College. He graduated from the University of Minnesota with a Veterinarian Degree in May 1954. He worked at a veterinary practice in Pipestone, MN, until 1958. On June 30, 1956, he married June Baumgard. In 1958 they moved to Emery where he started his own veterinary practice. In 1986 he left the practice to work for the USDA. He worked there until retiring in 1998. Carl was an active member of St. John’s Lutheran Church in Emery where he served on various boards and committees; he served on the Emery School Board and the Emery Community Cemetery Board. He was an avid sports fan, loved to travel, attend his grandchildren’s many activities and discussing local and world news with his daily coffee crew. He enjoyed watching and feeding his birds, reading and his afternoon naps.
He is survived by his wife of sixty-one years, June, seven children: Karla (Kenny) Olinger of Emery, Dr. Scott (Mia) Harberts of Pueblo, CO, Kristi (Greg) Fiscus of Louisville, KY, Lori (Dave) Jeseritz of Helena, MT, Mark (LaNae) Harberts of Freeman, Bryan (Angie) Harberts of Emery, Barb Harberts of Savoonga, AK; 15 grandchildren, 4 great grandchildren, one sister, Elsie Cieri of Livingston, MT, and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by an infant son, Thomas, one brother, Howard, and sister, Marlys.
