Ida Sophia Carpenter was born July 7, 1916 at home in rural Parkston, SD to Solomon and Maria (Vetter) Tiede. She grew up on the farm and attended country school. At age 21 she moved to Sioux Falls and worked as a waitress. On June 8, 1941 she married C. Lyle Carpenter at the Salem Lutheran Church in Parkston. The couple continued living in the Parkston area for several years. She helped other families in their homes and she was a seamstress. They later moved to Mitchell where she lived the remainder of her life.

Throughout her life she enjoyed sewing; making quilts for missions, knitting, crocheting, and even sewed her daughters’ wedding dresses. Ida was a member of First Lutheran Church, where she was an active volunteer, including teaching Sunday school and served as past president of First Lutheran Church Women. She was active in PTO when her children were growing up. She enjoyed volunteering through RSVP and Dakota Discovery Museum.

She is survived by her daughter Lyla (Hank) Kennedy, Manchester, NH; grandsons Tim (Marti) Kennedy, Milford, NH and David Kenney, Mitchell, SD; and great-grandson Donovan Kennedy, Milford, NH.

She was preceded in death by her husband C. Lyle Carpenter; daughter Mary Ann Kenney; six brothers, Theodore, Fred, Otto, Paul, John, and Harold Tiede; and two sisters Lydia Krueger and Bertha Reitz.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in her name to the American Heart Association, American Cancer Society, or First Lutheran Church in Mitchell.

To the family and loved ones of Ida Carpenter, may you have peace. I'm so sorry for your loss. Remember in your grief, that God loves you. Jesus said in John 5:28, 29 that he would call and those in the graves would be resurrected, some to everlasting life. Revelation 21:1-4 tells what kind of world those resurrected ones and their families will enjoy. I hope this helps. Steve

Lyla, I just read this while looking for a friend's mother. We lived on Rowley and 12th; Mary Ann and I were friends as were you and my brother John. I remember your lovely mother and your family. My prayers are with you and your family.
