Harvey Mueller, 90, of Parkston, SD died Wednesday, July 05, 2017 at Avera Bormann Manor in Parkston. Funeral services will be 10:30 AM Saturday July 8th, 2017 at Salem Lutheran Church in Parkston. Visitation will be 5-7:00 PM Friday at First Lutheran Church in Mitchell with a 7:00 PM prayer service. Arrangements by Bittner Funeral Chapel.
Harvey Lavale Mueller was born March 26, 1927 to Anna and Arthur Mueller on a farm near Mt. Vernon, SD, the youngest of 11 children. He was baptized and confirmed at St. John’s Lutheran Church at Hillside. He attended grade school at Baker Township, and through 9th grade at Mt. Vernon High School. In 1943, he moved with his parents to Tobin Township to farm.
At age 18, Harvey entered the Army and served in WWII, where he was stationed in Fort Richardson, Alaska. He was honorably discharged on July 6, 1946, and received the Asiatic Pacific Theater Service Medal and the Victory Medal.
Harvey married Laverna Lindeman on Sunday June 27, 1948 at Hope Lutheran Church in Delmont. They farmed on the home place west of Ethan for 36 years. He served on the township board and school board for many years. Harvey was an active member of St. John’s Lutheran Church, served on the church council and as Sunday School Superintendent, and sang in the church choir. They were also members of First Lutheran in Mitchell, and current members of Salem Lutheran Church in Parkston.
In 1984 Harvey and Laverna became the managers for Wesley Acres Retirement Home and moved to Mitchell, SD. They retired from Wesley Acres in 1992, and Harvey worked for Mueller Lumber for the next 13 years, and then worked for the Mitchell Parks and Rec Department for 2 years.
In 2005, they returned to Wesley Acres as residents. They moved to the Avera Assisted Living in Parkston in August of 2012, and Bormann Manor in January 2017.
Harvey is survived by his wife of 69 years, Laverna, Bormann Manor in Parkston; daughters Connie (Ron) Thury, Parkston; Diana (Dan) Schlaffman, Ethan; and Lori (Tom) Oster, Sioux Falls; grand-children Eric Thury, Paul Thury, Chad Thury, Ryan Thury, Crystal Schlaffman, Mike Schlaffman, Jennifer Hurst, Tiffany Oster, Matt Oster, and Adam Oster; great-grandchildren Samantha Grosdidier, Beth Aulner, Lincoln Thury, Landon Thury, Rilyn Thury, Saige Schlaffman, Clara Hurst, Amirt Thury, Zilla Thury, Omara Thury, Eliam Thury, Sullivan Oster, and Hadley Oster. He also is survived by sister-in-law Margaret Mueller, brother-in-law Dale Lindeman, and sister-in-law Frieda Baier.
Harvey was preceded in death by his parents, seven sisters (Selma Hall, Lillian Kistler, Minnie Jean Helgesen, Alma Gerbig, Alvina Furness, Adeline Goldammer, Elsie Rippe) and three brothers (Walter Mueller, Elmer Mueller, Herbert Mueller).
