Myrna Hayen

February 28, 1961 - May 23, 2017

Myrna Hayen, 56, of Mitchell died Tuesday, May 23, 2017.  Funeral services will be 10:30 AM Tuesday, May 30, at Trinity Lutheran Church in Mitchell.  Burial will be at Graceland Cemetery.  Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at Trinity Lutheran Church.

Myrna Lou (Schulz) Hayen was born to Walter and Lois (Thomas) Schulz at Parkston, SD on February 28, 1961.  She died under hospice care at her home in Mitchell, SD, on May 23, 2017, following surgical complications.

Myrna was baptized and confirmed at Faith Lutheran Church, Parkston, SD.  She graduated from Parkston High School in 1979 and South Dakota State University, Brookings, in 1985.  She married Don Schladweiler at Parkston, SD, in 1978; they later divorced.  She married Stuart Hayen on July 13, 1985, at Trinity Lutheran Church, Mitchell, SD.  She remained a faithful member of Trinity until her death.

Myrna’s joys in life included her family, crafting and scrapbooking, photography, genealogy, traveling, collecting Hallmark ornaments and Disney memorabilia, cooking, and reading.  Despite chronic kidney disease throughout much of her adult life, she was able to remain active and involved with family, community and church until complications occurred following surgery in January 2017.  She was able to fulfill a life-long dream and spend 6 weeks traveling through Europe with her sister Marlene in 2003.  Her most recent highlight was a trip to Vietnam in December 2016 to attend her son Kevin’s wedding.

Myrna was a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution, and had verified ancestry that would have qualified her for membership in the Mayflower Society.  She was also a 26-year member of Beta Sigma Phi sorority.

Myrna was preceded in death by her parents. Walter and Lois Schulz, her parents-in-law Charlie and Olga Hayen, and stepson Chad Hayen (in infancy).  Survivors include Stuart, her beloved husband of 31 years; sons Steven Schladweiler, Mitchell, SD, Kevin Hayen (wife Nguyen), Ft. Bragg, NC, and Nicholas Hayen (Hannah), St. Paul, MN; stepson Brett Hayen (Christine), Rapid City, SD; sisters Leann Schulz-Thomas (Jesse Thomas), Marion, SD, Karen Schulz (Jim Jacobson), Broomfield, CO, and Marlene Schulz (Berhanu Getahun), Sioux Falls, SD; siblings-in-law Charlene Arbach (Chuck), Las Vegas, NV, Paul Hayen, Manhattan, KS, Peggy Weber (Lyle), Alexandria, SD, and Tim Hayen (Vicki), Bemidji, MN; and former sister-in-law Sherri Hayen, Kansas.  Additional survivors include many cousins, nieces, nephews and stepgrandchildren, as well as special friends too numerous to list individually (you know who you are!).

My heart goes out to Stuart and the Hayen family and friends of Myrna in your time of sorrow. I know Myrna has left you with many precious memories from her 56 short but full years with us. When death robs us of someone we love very much, it causes much sadness and grief. Our loving heavenly Father, "Jehovah (Psalm 83:18) is close to the brokenhearted; He saves those who are crushed in spirit." (Psalm 34:18) Isaiah 33:24 guarantees us: "And no resident will say "I am sick," ever again. Revelations 21: 4 says: "And he will wipe out every tear from their eyes, and death will be no more, neither will mourning nor outcry nor pain be anymore." The family is in my prayers and I offer my heartfelt condolences. Feel free to me contact me at my email address:

My broken heart goes out to Stuart, Steve, Kevin, Nick, Leann, Karen, and Marlene. I'm so glad I was able to spend time with Myrna this last year. After so many years, when we got together it was as if we were kids again. I will miss her so much. May she be free of all pain and illness and run through the fields of Heaven...with a few cats, of course. God bless and rest in peace my dear cousin.
