Frances L. Mathis was born on July 10, 1932 to Gotfried and Martha (Seuss) Schelske near Tripp SD. She obtained the age of 84 years, 7 months and 22 days. On July 14, 1949 she married Marvin E. Mathis in Mitchell. They lived and farmed north of Mt. Vernon until moving to Mitchell in 1982.
Frances worked for over 30 years as a caregiver. She first worked at the Wilge Home in Mitchell until it closed. Then she worked at the Brady Nursing Home as a CNA for over 20 years. The residents would request her because she was such a hard worker, cared for them so lovingly, and would sing to them to brighten their day. We continue to meet previous co-workers who comment on her singing in the hallways of the nursing home. Frances also cared for senior citizens in their homes. She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church and served as a Sunday School Teacher. She loved to bowl and did so in retirement. Even after retirement she continued to visit the residents at the Brady Nursing Home.
Frances is survived by her five children: Gary Mathis of Sioux Falls, Sherry (Dwight) Gerlach of Corsica, Shirley Rippe of Brookings, Gerry Mathis of Mitchell and Priscilla (Dave) Emmert of Mitchell; one brother-in-law, Delbert Mathis of Illinois; one sister-in-law, Elaine Mathis of Watertown; seven grandchildren, four step-grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren, two step-great grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.
