Nellie LaVonne King


August 5, 1939 - December 20, 2016


Nellie LaVonne King was born August 5, 1939 at home in Hanson County to Everett and Lena (Wolf) King. She was baptized and confirmed at First Lutheran Church in Mitchell. She attended schools in Hanson County and graduated from Mitchell High School in 1957. She received her Teaching Degree in 1960 and her BA in Education in 1965 from Dakota Wesleyan University. She taught elementary education in area schools for twenty years and while teaching finished her education and received her Masters in Art of Teaching at Augustana College in 1973. Nellie worked for many years at the Town House Café, Lueken’s Bakery and for sixteen years at Avera Queen of Peace Hospital. One of her favorite pastimes was putting up Christmas decorations at their home for the residents at Firesteel Nursing home.

She is survived by Mary Ellen Jepsen, longtime partner and friend, three brothers: Leo of Sioux Falls, Leonard (Maggie) of Apache Junction, AZ, Irvin (Jeanie) of Artesian and two sisters: Caroline (Ross) Lee of Mitchell, Charlotte Nicholson of Artesian and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, niece, Michelle King, nephew, Wayne King, sister-in-law, Jessie King and brother-in-law, Jerry Nicholson.

Mary Ellen you have our sympathy in the death of your Special friend. May the memories of you life with Nellie Lavoie bring you Peace & Comfort all these days. It is sad she passed away at Christmas time, but this will be her First Christmas in Heaven singing with the Angels, & all her loved ones who have passed away before her. Prayers coming your way.

I leave the hospital sometimes late in the evenings and the beautiful Christmas decorations that you and Nellie put up always make me smile and eliminates the stress of the day. I'm so sorry for your loss. You will be in my prayers.
