Carolynn Jean Dockendorf

January 27, 1953 - November 25, 2016

Carolynn Jean (Kurtenbach) Dockendorf was born on January 27, 1953 in Mitchell, SD to Robert and Helen (Kitto) Kurtenbach. She grew up in Mitchell and graduated from Mitchell High School in 1971. After graduating from Mitchell Technical Institute and Dakota Wesleyan University, Carolynn went on to get her Registered Nurses degree from the University of South Dakota in Vermillion, SD.  On April 29th 1972, she married Leon Dockendorf at Armour, SD. In 1984 they moved to Emery, SD where they made their home and raised their family.

For over 30 years Carolynn was a very dedicated and passionate nurse. She spent most of her career at Sanford Health holding multiple positions from the surgical floor to dialysis and finally to the Patient Appointment Center where she retired. Carolynn was a leader and specialty speaker on the subject of dialysis and traveled to conferences to share her knowledge. When she wasn't helping others she enjoyed spending time with her family and friends. She and Leon enjoyed spending time out at their cabin near Fairfax, SD, with her children and grandchildren. She also enjoyed cooking, reading, crocheting, and playing cards with friends. She was an active member of St. Martin's Catholic Church.

Carolynn is survived by her two daughters: Brenda Wyland and her husband, Jeremy, of Glyndon, MN, Paula Burke of Emery, SD; son, Lee Dockendorf and wife Ashton of Sioux Falls, SD; son-in-law, Brian Leitheiser and wife, Becky, of Emery, SD; ten grandchildren: Zackary and Madyson Leitheiser, Kelli, Tyler, and Kari Osterloo, Sydney Wyland, Parker and Tessa Burke, McKoen and Leighton Dockendorf. She is also survived by her siblings: Ardis Breidenbach, Beverly Schmitz, Donna King, Barbara Svensen, Kevin Kurtenbach, Kalvin Kurtenbach and Julie Kobernusz.

She is preceded in death by her husband, Leon Dockendorf, daughter, Tammy Leitheiser, her parents, sister, Roberta Kurtenbach and a nephew, Darrel Dockendorf.

Our thoughts and prayers are with you all. My only glimpse of Carolynn is through knowing her daughter, Brenda. Based on that the world just lost a very special person.

My thoughts and prayers to the Dockendorf family with the passing of Carolynn. It can be said that children are an extension of their parents. The friendship I have with Brenda, as well as the opportunity to have met Paula and Lee over the past few years confirms with me that, they are a direct reflection of both Carolynn and Leon's legacy. Knowing their mother and father are now in a better place, I am confident Carolynn and Leon will live on through their children and grandchildren. Very proud parents in heaven. God bless!

Carolynn and Leon were such wonderful people. I remember when my mother, Elaine Heumiller, worked for them and took care of their children or at least the youngest two. Lee and my daughter, Stacy, were high school classmates so we knew the family pretty well. You have our deepest sympathy in your loss. She is now at peace with her loving husband and daughter along with the other family members that preceded her in death.
