Martha Louise Glissendorf

December 19, 1934 - September 27, 2016

Martha Louise Adams was born December 19, 1934, to Harold and Merle (Edgar) Adams in Kosciusko County, Indiana.  She was raised in Claypool, Indiana, and in 1946 at the tender age of 11, moved with her family to Chamberlain, South Dakota.  Martha graduated from Chamberlain High School and attended the University of South Dakota where she was an active member of the Alpha Xi Delta sorority.  Martha worked as a secretary at the Western Adjustment Inspection Company.

On October 5, 1957, she married (Ralph) Leland “Speck” Glissendorf at St. James Catholic Church in Chamberlain.  They built a farm together four miles west of White Lake where they raised their children Ann, Dennis, and Karen.  As a family, they enjoyed road trips to visit friends and family, camping trips, movies, and attending the kids’ school and sports activities.  After the children were grown, Martha enjoyed bookkeeping positions at the Chamberlain Clinic, Adams Agency in Chamberlain, and Brooks Hardware in Kimball.  Martha and Speck loved couples bowling league, Circle Pitch Card Club, and impromptu card and domino games with their good friends and grandkids.  Being with the grandchildren was their greatest joy.

Martha was a member of St. Peter’s Catholic Church where she served as a catechism teacher and vocalist.  She was a member of the Catholic Daughters and Altar Society.  She found pride in helping the community as an EMT with the White Lake Ambulance Service and enjoying performing with various community choir groups.  Martha was involved in many social groups including the Red Hat Society, Socialettes, and Bridge Club.  She was proud to serve on both the Women’s State and National Pork Producers Councils.  Martha loved to crochet, work on jigsaw puzzles, and engage in rousing games of cards with the grandkids.

Grateful for having shared her life are Martha’s children:  Ann (Bruce) Mairose of Rochester, MN; Dennis (Lynette) Glissendorf of Rapid City; and Karen (Eric) Bravek of Brookings; eight grandchildren: Kyle (Rachel) Mairose, Catrina Mairose, Zachary, Brady, Hanna and Isabella Glissendorf, Sydney and Kaitlyn Bravek; two great-grandchildren: Lilah and Cavan Mairose; a brother: Gene (Arla Mae) Adams; brothers-in-law:  Jim Tielke and Riley Metz; sisters-in-law: Inge Glissendorf, Lois Adams and Jan Adams; and many nieces, nephews and friends.

Martha was preceded in death by her husband, Speck; infant daughter, Mary Kay; her parents, H.V. and Merle; sisters, Margaret Adams and Betty Tielke; brothers, Jack Adams, Frank Adams and Tony Adams; her father- and mother-in-law, Ralph and Edna Glissendorf; sisters-in-law Erma Adams, Jean Chandler, Delores Metz, Eunice Athey, Phyllis Mairose, Darlene Haines, Janet Glissendorf; brothers-in-law Darrel “Bud” Glissendorf, Wayne “Pete” Glissendorf, Adelbert “Tub” Glissendorf, Orville Haines, Joe Mairose, Larry Chandler, John Athey, Morry Green and Harley Bennett.

It's been a number of years since I have seen Martha- we both left the White Lake area - but years back we were together often. Raised our families at the same time & were active together with school activities as well as other groups. My sympathy to your entire family.
