Armand “Army” V. Zender was born April 23, 1917, at Jasper, MN, to Peter and Josephine (Glasrud) Zender. When he was two years old, he and his family moved to Alexandria, SD, where he grew up and attended grade school and high school, graduating in 1935. On July 23, 1935 he married Hilda F. Hoscheid at Billings, MT. Armand joined the Navy and served in the Navy Seabees from 1943 to 1946. Following his discharge, he worked and enrolled in the business program at Billings Business College and then worked for Ray Austin Associates (a large distributor of oil field equipment), managing the office and warehouse.
Armand and family returned to Alexandria in 1947, where he worked with his dad in the plumbing and heating business. He owned and operated a service station north of Alexandria until 1953. He and his wife Hilda purchased the John V. Michels Insurance Agency in Alexandria, and at the same time he was appointed secretary-treasurer of the Farmers Mutual Insurance Co. of Hanson County. Two years later they purchased the Hanson County Land & Abstract Company, merging this with their insurance and real estate business. In 1981 they sold the business and retired, continuing to live in Alexandria.
Armand was a member of St. Mary of Mercy Catholic Church, American Legion Post 41, Alexandria Community Club and Hanson County Fire Department. He also served on the Library Board and three terms on the City Council.
He is survived by his daughter, Sherri (James) Zuber of Hartford, SD; two grandchildren, Cathy (Lance) Redfield of Charlotte, NC, Michael Zuber of San Leandro, CA; two, great- grandchildren, Ryan and Jordan Redfield and one brother, James Zender of Sumter SC.
He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Hilda, two brothers, James and Ozzie and sister, Mildred Gardner.
