James Paul Schaffer was born November 9, 1926 in Saskatchewan, Canada to Wendel and Mary (Megenhauser) Schaffer. He graduated from Notre Dame High School in 1944 in Mitchell. He served in the US Navy as a corpsman. After returning to Mitchell he worked as an aid at St. Joseph Hospital for several years. On October 30, 1950 he married Doris Stiefvater at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Salem, SD. They resided in Mitchell where Jim was employed as an autobody repairman for many years. He was a member of Holy Spirit Catholic Church, where he was a Eucharistic Minister and was an American Legion and Knights of Columbus member.
He is survived by his wife of sixty five years, Doris, two daughters: Rene DeJong, Rapid City, Connie (Larry) Mutchler, Trent, four sons: Joseph (Brenda) Schaffer, Sturgis, Patrick Schaffer and William (Connie) Schaffer, Omaha, Eric (Gwen) Schaffer, Mitchell, seven grandchildren: Kelly and Jim Mutchler, Mark and Annika Schaffer, Joe DeJong, Payton and Ethan Schaffer and two great grandchildren: Andrew Knox and Braxon DeJong.
He was preceded in death by his parents, brother, Edward and two sisters: Mary Ann Kessler and Dorothy Haiar.
