Keith Latrel Hiemstra


February 28, 1922 - September 30, 2015



Keith Latrel Hiemstra was born February 28, 1922, at Kingsley, IA, to Jay and Marguerite (Bruce) Lehner. She attended Union Country School in Union Township, rural Plymouth County, IA. On September 29, 1941, she married Orlo Hiemstra in Wayne NE. They farmed near Kingsley, IA until 1953, when they began farming in the Mitchell area. In 1974, they moved to a farm in the Storla area where she worked in the Storla Sunset Nursing Home for many years. Keith was an active 4-H Leader and Extension Club member. She enjoyed her grandkids’ sporting events, and also writing letters was a favorite pastime, but most of all she enjoyed the time spent with her family.

She is survived by her children: Delbert (DeAnna) Hiemstra, Surprise, AZ, Norma (Rodney) Tuttle, Mitchell, Beverly (Rodney) Spellbring, Gillette, WY, Darla Kjelden, Brandon, SD, Merlin (Mike) Hiemstra, Seffner, FL, Dennis (Vickie) Hiemstra, Mitchell, Bryant Hiemstra, Letcher; 17 grandchildren; 13 great grandchildren; one sister, Hope Freidrich, Anthon, IA; a brother-in-law, Maynard DeBoer, Archer, IA and five sisters-in-law: Lucy Lehner, LeMars, IA, Eunice Lehner, LeMars, IA, Charlene Lehner, Milford, IA, Frances Hiemstra, Aurelia, IA and LaVern Hiemstra, Kansas.

She was preceded in death by her husband in 2003, three brothers: John in infancy, Verl (Bud), Dale and Delmar Lehner, three sisters: Bonnie in infancy, Joy Baker, Betty DeBoer; three brothers-in-law: Harley, Lester, Orville Hiemstra and two sisters-in-law, Ethel Hiemstra and Katie Hiemstra.


In lieu of flowers a memorial has been established to Foundation Fighting Blindness, 7168 Columbia Gateway Drive, Suite 100, Columbia, MD 21046.

Dear Bev, Rod and families,
We are so deeply sorry to hear of the loss of your mom and grandmother,
Bev, I tried to call Rod tonight to get your #. We don't get the newspaper everyday and we had no idea about your sad news. I read it last night and realized that we had missed all of your mom's services. We love you all and would have been there for you if we had known. We are so very sorry. I enjoyed taking care of Keith, she was so cute and just so sweet! I also loved that she had such a supportive loving family! She will be missed

I have many happy memories of the.times we(the 2 Grandmas) were together for so many happy times. I will miss them.
