Alfred John Koch was born August 1, 1930 to Peter & Elizabeth (Kaus) Koch in Plankinton, SD. He was baptized and confirmed at St. Mary’s Parish in Stickney and attended school at Pleasant Lake School. He served in the US Navy from 1951 to 1955. He attended basic training in San Diego and then served 6 months as a fire fighter in Washington. He was then stationed in Japan and Hawaii aboard the USS Greenlet as a welder. After returning from the service he farmed near Stickney and then Plankinton. On April 19, 1956 he married Melva Dean Meier. With this union they had 3 children, Patricia Ann, Sharon Marie & Bradley Allen. They lived on the farm in Plankinton for a few years and then they moved to White Lake. He worked on road construction and at the creamery; he then started Koch’s Construction which he ran until his retirement. He was a life member of the American Legion and held many offices throughout the years. He was also a life member of the VFW. He served on the White Lake Fire Department for many years and served as Fire Chief for 2 years. He enjoyed camping, fishing, hunting and spending time with his children & grandchildren.
Alfred is survived by his wife Melva of 59 years, his children, Patricia (Koch) Wombwell & husband Forrest of Kansas City, MO, Sharon (Koch) Suelflow & husband Wayne of Amarillo, TX, and Brad Koch & wife Arlene of White Lake. His grandchildren, Abby (Suelflow) Brammer and husband Justin of Ft. Worth, TX, Lucas Suelflow & wife Lindsey of Little Elm, TX, Adam Koch & wife Katie of Mitchell, SD, Tyler Koch and wife Kim of Mitchell, SD, Derek Koch & wife Shandra of Plankinton, SD, and Laura Wombwell of Kansas City, MO. and 7 great-grandchildren, Kate, Parker, Zander, Mallory, Ty, Luke & Aubrey.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Peter & Elizabeth; 3 brothers, Gene, Don, & Jim, and Melva’s parents, Peter & Zinderella (sis) Meier.
