Maureen Kay Kunkel

Maureen Kay Kunkel was born January 27, 1945 in Mitchell to LaVerne and Norma (Barnes) Phillips. She grew up and attended school in Mitchell, graduating from high school in 1963. She graduated in 1966 from MTI with a secretarial degree and in 1986 with a LPN Nursing degree. She worked as a nurse at Firesteel Health Care in Mitchell, Colonial Manor in Salem and Dow Rommel in Sioux Falls until retiring. On March 18, 1967 she married Ronald Larson.  They had three children, Terry Lee, Chad Wayne and Brett Allen. They lost Terry to cancer in 1979. On November 25, 1989 she married Lloyd “Bud” Kunkel at St. Peter’s Catholic Church in Farmer, SD. They lived on Bud’s farm at rural Alexandria until moving to Mitchell 2001. Maureen and Bud enjoyed traveling, especially with family. At one time, she even traveled to Europe by herself and was so proud that she did it on her own. She loved antiquing and garage sales. Above all she loved spending time with her sons, daughters-in-law and grandchildren.

She is survived by her husband, Lloyd “Bud” Kunkel; two sons: Chad (Jill) Larson, Sioux Falls, Brett (Michele) Larson, Chandler, AZ; two sisters: Vicki (Junior C) Sonne, Mitchell, Leslie “Puddy” (Daniel) Barber, Omaha, NE; three brothers: Larry (Karla) Phillips, Mitchell,  David (Cheryl) Phillips, Mitchell, and Scott Phillips, Letcher; six grandchildren: Jacey, Connor, Garrett, Nicole, Ashley, and Juliet, three sisters-in-law: Lois Kayser, Lucine (Tony) Merlock, Mary (Gib) Zeal, a brother-in-law, Ron (Gloria) Kunkel and many nieces and nephews and great nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her son, Terry, her brother, Gary, her parents, father and mother-in-law, Alma and Ray Kunkel and brother-in-law, Norbert Kayser.

Happened across the notice of Maureen's passing on Wed.. Too late to attend her funeral on Tues..Am so sorry. I would have been there had I known in tme. Was so shocked to read her name. Really took me by supprise. I know that she had breathing problems but did not think that it was all that bad. Did she develope something else? I am so sorry for all of you. She has always been such a wonderful person. Always had a way to make all feel great. Will try to call you later when things are a little more settled. God be with.
