Kathy Marie Schwalm

September 18, 1951 - June 30, 2015

Kathy Marie Schwalm was born September 18, 1951 in Tilden, NE to Paul and Mabel (Nelson) Van Ert. Kathy graduated from Tilden High School. She graduated from Lakeland Medical School in Minneapolis in 1970 and began work as a lab technician.

On June 19, 1971 Kathy married Jerry Schwalm in Tilden, NE. They spent 32 loving years together until Jerry passed away in 2003. She never really got over his passing and loved him until the day she left this world to join him. They had two children, David and Jenny. Kathy had a close bond with and a fierce love for her children and three grandchildren.  She was thrilled to become a grandma and thoroughly enjoyed watching her grandchildren grow.

She cherished her time spent with family and friends. Her life was defined by caring for others. After working at the Delaney Clinic for 24 years, Kathy became friends with many people in the community. In her final days we came to realize just how many friends confided in her. Kathy was an avid gardener and enjoyed planting and nurturing her garden and flower beds. She had recently taken classes and received her certification as a South Dakota Master Gardener. Kathy had a strong love for her faith and was a long time active member of Mitchell Holy Spirit Catholic Church and the Calvary Cemetery Board.

Kathy is survived by her mother, Mabel Van Ert, Mitchell, her children: David Schwalm, Mitchell and Jenny (Schwalm) Holmes, husband Isaac and grandchildren, Ian, Logan and Aiden, Worthing, SD; her brother and sister-in-law, Gary and Lisa Van Ert, Lincoln, NE; sister and brother-in-law, Lisa and Charles Redding, Martell, NE; five nieces and one nephew.

Kathy was preceded in death by her husband, Jerry, father, Paul Van Ert, brother, Alan Van Ert, father-in-law and mother-in-law, Leo and Lena Schwalm, and brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Dode and Ella Heinrich.

Our thoughts and prayers go out to Jenny, David, Isaac and family. Living next door to Isaac and Jenny, I had the pleasure of meeting Kathy on a few occasions. It wasn't hard to see that she was a very loving mother and caring person. It saddens us to hear of your loss and we will keep you in our thoughts and prayers during this difficult time.

I knew Kathy when she lived in Brookings and we both worked at the Brookings Clinic. We spent a lot of time together when we lived in Brookings. I remember her car "Gregory" and traveling to NE to meet her family there. And her wedding to Jerry. May she rest in peace. Peace and prayers to her family.

I am so saddened by this. Kathy was a dear friend to me, we were church pals, we would lock eyes to greet each other before mass and during peace. I will miss her dearly.

Jenny and family-- I only met your mother a few times, but I remember she sat next to my mom for some kind of USD event and they had a good time talking--probably about their kids, their husbands and all the other things that made them smile. I am so sorry you have to be feeling this kind of pain. To lose a mother and a grandmother while you still have so much love to give and memories to make must be unbearable. I doubt there is anything to say or do that can make you feel any better but I hope you can feel the love and prayers around you as you grieve. And know that even the people who only met your mom a few times have memories of her that are happy and are ones that we won't soon forget.
