Henry “Hank” Kunkel was born March 9, 1923 in Springlake Township in Hanson County to John and Elizabeth (Becker) Kunkel. He attended school at St. Mary’s in Epiphany. On October 26, 1943 he married Fern Koepke. Together they farmed on his parent’s farm until retiring in 1977, then built their new home one mile south of his birth place. In 2008 they moved to Mitchell. He was a member of the Epiphany Catholic Church for sixty-five years and Holy Family Catholic Church. Hank enjoyed camping, fishing, playing cards and visiting with family and friends.
He is survived by his wife of seventy-one years, Fern, five children: Lavone Zachary of Mitchell; Richard (Carol) Kunkel of Spencer; Cheryl Loveall of Toledo OR; Gary (Julie) Kunkel of Mitchell and Dale (Gingar) Kunkel of Plankinton; twelve grandchildren, numerous great-grandchildren and two sisters-in-law: Ann Kunkel and Pat Koepke.
He was preceded in death by his son, Curtis Kunkel, four brothers: Ray, Sib, Leo and Mark and three sisters: Clara Kunkel, Marie Tentinger and Hilda Mutziger.
