William "Bill" Platz

March 13, 1954 - February 23, 2015

William "Bill" Mackey Platz was born March 13, 1954, in San Diego, CA, to John and Adelaide (Mackey) Platz. He grew up and attended school at Sidney, NE, and graduated from Sidney high School in 1972. He graduated from Western State College, Gunnison, CO, with a degree in botany and a degree in agronomy from Colorado State University, Fort Collins, CO.

He founded Crop Tech, Inc., a farm consulting business in 1987. On July 5, 1991, he married Paula Hoffman in Mitchell. Bill loved God’s green earth and his work as an agronomist was a testament to that love. He said he was blessed to love everything about his career; the agronomy and the people with whom he worked, employees, clients and colleagues. He retired January 1, 2015.

Bill worked hard and played harder. When not working his usual 15 hour day, he was bicycling or skiing. He served on several boards of bicycle related organizations including the Mickleson Trail Trek Committee, Palace City Pedaler’s Board and was instrumental in starting the Lake Mitchell Hiking Biking Trail. He was also a member of the First United Methodist Church, the Masonic Lodge and was a founder of the SD Independent Crop Consulting Association.

He is survived by his wife, Paula;  his father Dr. John Platz, Sidney, NE; siblings:  Johna Walker, Lincoln, NE, Richard Platz, Fort Collins, CO, Mary (Kent) Matsutani, Fort Collins, CO, Amy (Brad) Stepp, Stoughton, WI; sisters-in-law, Lisa Platz, Baytown, TX, Mary Jo (Paul Johnson) Hoffman, Sioux City, IA, and Lona Hoffman, Brookings, SD; brothers-in-law, Jerry (Diann) Hoffman, Crooks, SD, Tom (Kim) Hoffman, Brookings, SD; and daughter, Jessica (Luc) Vallone, Ithaca, NY. Bill loved and was cherished by many nieces, nephews and numerous friends and family far and wide.

Bill was preceded in death by his mother, Adelaide Platz, brother, Paul Platz and in-laws, Madeline and LaVerne Hoffman.

I am a friend of Bill's sister Johna, and only had the pleasure of meeting him once, but it was memorable! He was full of life and laughter and kindness, having brought their father to visit Johna in the hospital after a surgery. She had no need for pain relief with him in the room!

We were certainly sorry to learn of Bill's passing. Doesn't really seem like it was that long ago we were doing silly things in high school. Our thoughts and prayer's are with Bill's family at this time of their loss. May you always find comfort and strength through prayer and in God's word.

One of the most coolest dudes I have had the pleasure of knowing and having as a cousin. Nothing but respect and admiration for this young man. Our love and prayers to Paula, his brother and isters, his father, his friends and all those who had the joy of knowing Bill and are hurting, like we are.

I only knew Bill for a short time in this life, but I'm so glad our paths crossed through his sister, Amy. He had a presence about him, a visible love for life, that made you want to be near him. Thoughts and prayers from Wisconsin are with everyone who knew and loved him. Be well. Always remember.

It is hard to talk about a guy like Bill that was always there for everyone in their time of need, and always had an outstretched hand for anyone who needed a friend. He was a very special person, and I thank god for getting to know him. My thoughts and prayers are with Paula and the family in this very difficult time.
