Earl Eugene Nopens


September 27, 1915 - December 4, 2014



Earl Eugene Nopens was born September 27, 1915 on his grandfather, George Harrington’s farm near Carthage, SD to Walter and Mary (Harrington) Nopens.  He attended Spring Lake and Fairview Township Grade Schools. He was inducted into the Army-Air Corps in 1942 and was trained at Jefferson Barracks, Lemay, MO and Scott Field near Belleville, IL.  He was stationed at Florence Air Field in Florence, SC.  He served state side during WWII and became an expert in radio communications and ship wiring.  He was honorably discharged in December 1945 with the rank of Sergeant.  He returned to the family farm where he farmed until retiring in 1997. On October 16, 1992 he married Thelma Storla.  He was a member of the United Methodist Church and the Fulton/Alexandria American Legion.

Being grateful for having shared in his life are: step-children, Dianne and Dr. Carl Giombetti, Daylesford, PA; Janice and Denny Baumgart, James Storla, Milbank, SD and Myron and Bess Storla, Rochester, MN; Dolores (Tootie) Nopens, a niece Tam (Rod) Fluth, two nephews Tim (Ann) and Craig (Dorothy) Nopens, step-grandchildren and many step-great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews and great nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Thelma, one sister, Violet Weinberg and brother, Dale Nopens, stepson, Dewayne Storla, two nephews, a great niece, and a great great great nephew.



Memorials are preferred to be made to the Alexandria American Legion.

I have fond memories of cousin Earl visiting my homes in Arkansas with Norman and Idie. He was a terrific human being and will be missed.
