Leslie Daniel Mutziger was born on April 8, 1917 to Frank and Mary Mutziger on a farm near Ethan, SD. He graduated from Ethan High School in 1936. Les helped out on the family farm until he was drafted in to the U.S. Army. He served in the Army during World War II from 1942 to 1945. During his service in the army he served as a medic in Anchorage, Alaska.
On May 7th, 1946 Les married Rita Weber of Dimock, SD. They lived on a farm east of Ethan for many years; there they raised their four children. Les and his wife, Rita, celebrated their 68th Wedding Anniversary on May 7th of this year.
While farming and raising his family Les served on the Hanson County School Board for many years. He very much enjoyed his work in the school district. Les has also been a lifetime member of the Ethan American Legion Alvin Erpenbach Post 261. Recently Les received his 65th year pin. He has been a member for the past 68 years.
Upon leaving the farm Les and Rita purchased their retirement home in Mitchell. They have lived in Mitchell since 1978. They have been members of the Holy Spirit Catholic Church since 1978.
During retirement Les and Rita enjoyed travelling to various parts of the world. They made several trips to Europe. They also visited Canada and Hawaii. Les enjoyed these trips immensely.
Les always had time for family and friends. He enjoyed visiting and socializing. Les was always ready for a good card game and social hour. He also enjoyed spending time with his children and grandchildren.
Grateful to have shared many years together are his wife, Rita; their four children, Judy, Bangkok, Thailand, Jim (Karen Schurz), Salem, SD, Sue, Sioux Falls, SD, Lois (Ron Thuringer), Madison, SD. Survivors also include their seven grandchildren, Terry (Jill) Mutziger, Tami (Kurt) Bies, Tom (Robyn) Mutziger, Cheltzie Hentz, Jason (Nancy) Thuringer, Becka (Ryan) Burger, and Rob (Kirsten) Thuringer. They have eleven great grandchildren. Les is also survived by one sister, Sylvia Geppert, Kimball, SD.
Les was preceded in death by his parents, Frank and Mary (Sullivan) Mutziger, and his seven brothers and sisters, Irene Puetz, Della Wermers, Vincent (Bud) Mutziger, Leo Mutziger, Lawrence Mutziger, Alice Wingen, and Francis Mutziger.
