Mary Beth (Pecenka) Hockett


November 13, 1958 - June 18, 2014


Mary Beth (Pecenka) Hockett, 55, Fishers, IN and formerly of Stickney, SD died Wednesday, June 18, 2014 under hospice care at her parent’s home in Mitchell, SD, after a valiant fight of over four years with ovarian cancer.  A private family burial will take place at St. Mary’s Cemetery in Stickney at a later date. 

Mary Elizabeth Pecenka was born in Mitchell on November 13, 1958 to Harold and Janice (Billars) Pecenka.  She grew up in Stickney and graduated from Stickney High School. While in High School she was a delegate to Girl’s State, President of the Student Council, a Betty Crocker Family Leader, served on the Easter Seal Board, Homecoming Queen, and was listed in Who’s Who in High School Students of America. Mary Beth participated in band, chorus, Madrigal chorus, cheerleading, declam, school play, school newspaper, athletics and her church choir. She attended the University of SD on a Presidential Alumni Scholarship and graduated with a BS in Biology in 1981. While attending the University she was Vice President of Alpha Phi Sorority and Chairman of Campus Activities Council. Mary Beth then worked as a nanny in New York for two years before graduating with a Physical Therapy degree from the University of Iowa in 1984. She then got her MBA at Indiana Wesleyan in 2009.

She married Richard D. Hockett Jr. on July 01, 1984. Two sons were born to them: Tyler Deane in 1988 and Conor James in 1991. MaryBeth worked as a Home Care Physical Therapist for over 25 years. She loved flowers and painted in oils and chalk pastels.

She is survived by her sons, Tyler and Conor, Fishers, IN; her parents, Harold and Janice Pecenka, Mitchell; two brothers: Mike (Paula) Pecenka, Mitchell and Daniel (Cathy) Pecenka, McKinney, TX; an uncle, Dr.Thomas (Lynda) Billars, Sioux Falls; four aunts, Dr. Karen (Daryl) Heusinkveld, Colleyville, TX; Fran (Jim) Billars McKinnis, Littleton, CO; Wanda DeBoer, Brandon, SD and Dottie Hojem, Phoenix, AZ; two nephews, Jacob and Danny Pecenka and many cousins.

Memorials can be made to the Indianapolis Art Center.

I am sorry and surprised to hear that Mary Beth passed away. I have lost track of her over the years and my prayers with you and her family. I have many good memories of time spent with Mary Beth way back when at Stickney.
