Dorothy Headley, 98, of White Lake, SD, died Wednesday, September 23, 2020 at Aurora-Brule Nursing Home. A private inurnment will be held at the Underwood Community Cemetery. Arrangements by Bittner Funeral Chapel.
Dorothy Elvira Baughman was born on March 21, 1922 to Dwight and Ellen (Nelson) Baughman in Patten Township, Aurora County, SD. She attended and graduated from Patten School in 1940. Dorothy then attended Dakota Wesleyan University where she received her teaching certificate. She taught school in Pierpont and Deadwood, South Dakota.
Dorothy married Donald Headley on June 08, 1946 in Huron, SD. She gave birth to their son James on March 31, 1947 in Franklin, NJ. Dorothy returned to South Dakota for three years to assist her father and brothers after her mother's death before moving back to New Jersey. Dorothy earned her Bachelor's degree from Patterson State Teaching College in Patterson, NJ and taught school in Milton until her retirement in 1978. She was active in her community in New Jersey, serving in the Morris County Historical Society, PTA, Methodist Women's Group and the Milton Methodist Church.
She and Donald retired to South Dakota to be near their family: James, his wife Cristine, and their four children. Dorothy had a passion for plants and trees and was an avid flower and vegetable gardener. She was active in her community in South Dakota, as well, taking part in the Aurora County Historical Society, the Aurora County Old-timers Band, the Fortnightly Club and the Underwood Methodist Church. Donald and Dorothy also enjoyed traveling and wintering in Apache Junction, Arizona.
Dorothy will be remembered for her kind and generous spirit and wealth of historical knowledge.
Grateful for having shared her life, are her son James and daughter-in-law Cristine Headley of White Lake; her grandchildren Todd (Andreea) Headley of Fort Collins, CO, Sarah (Danny) Weiss of Sioux Falls, and Tina (Dustin) Ludens of White Lake; her great-grandchildren Sydney Headley of Winsor, CO, Sophia and Anderson Headley of Fort Collins, CO, and Quinn Ludens of White Lake; her niece Mary Ellen Bjorkman and nephews Alan Bjorkman and Glenn Bjorkman.
She was preceded in death by her husband Donald; her siblings Adeline Bjorkman, Hillis Baughman and Bryan Baughman; her grandson Jay Headley; and great-grandson Jack Headley.
