Joanne Hofwolt, 72, of Mitchell, SD, died Saturday, June 6, 2020 at her home in Mitchell. Funeral services will be 10:30 AM Thursday, June 11 at Mitchell Wesleyan Church. Burial will be in Servicemen’s Memorial Cemetery in Mitchell. Visitation will be from 5-7:00 PM Wednesday with a prayer service at 6:30 PM at Bittner Funeral Chapel.

Joanne was born October 15, 1947 to Ray E. and Anna N. (Wranek) Adams of Alexandria, S.D. at the Methodist Hospital in Mitchell, S.D.

In her early years Joanne started school at Letcher Public School. She completed the rest of her education in the Mitchell Public Schools, when her parents had moved to Mitchell in April 1954. She graduated from Mitchell Public School in 1965. Joanne was a goal driven individual who knew what she had to do and got it done, while at the same time helping all those around her for the better. She reached the goals she set, and helped so many relatives and friends reach theirs also while on her journey. Joanne overly enjoyed working, and she began employment at St. Joseph Hospital in Mitchell, S.D. Joanne enjoyed working and bettering others, her jobs were built around serving others. She also worked with Adjustment Training Center (LifeQuest) at various places as a staff member. Joanne attended Dakota Wesleyan University and graduated in 1978 with a BA in social work. She was a licensed social worker in the state of South Dakota. She always used her personality, education, abilities to better her life in every aspect. Later years she was a dietician at Bethel Lutheran Nursing Home when she moved to Madison, S.D. On October 15, 1988 Joanne Adams became Mrs. Hofwolt when she married Stanley Hofwolt and was happily married for 32 years. The Hofwolt’s moved back to Mitchell, S.D. where Joanne used her BA in social work to gain employment at Firesteel Healthcare Center for the next 15 years. after employment ended there she took employment with Home Instead. She retired in June 2019.

Joanne and her husband Stanley Hofwolt were also foster parents for many kids over the last 25 years, and eventually adopted 4 of the children as their own over the years. Joanne was a firm believer and pushed her family towards God’s love by having her family attend the Mitchell Wesleyan Church. Joanne was active through the Arms of Love program at Mitchell Wesleyan Church, delivering baked goods to those in need. Joanne also helped by volunteering in the nursery on Sundays, she loved watching her grandkids.  She worked hard to put her family in the best positions for their future, she enrolled her kids in Mitchell Christian School. She would help by volunteering as the lunch lady somedays at Mitchell Christian School. She liked taking her family on vacations each year, to get her kids to know her other family, and to grow and love one another. Joanne was also active in her community and was involved in organizations such as Red Hatters, MACPD, and a few others. She would spend fun, quality time with her sisters by playing bingo at the Mitchell Senior Citizen Center. Joanne loved hosting family gatherings or get togethers, especially at her beautiful home, she enjoyed cooking, planning, and setting up family events. Her Home was often filled to capacity with family and friends for any given occasion she was involved in. Joanne was a loving, caring, kind hearted, hardworking, diligent to the end, and a cheerful giver to family and anyone that needed help. She treated her clients like her family when she was employed at Home Instead, being a care taker. Joanne was an all-around wonderful woman, spouse, daughter, mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, friend, to relatives and everyone she met.

Joanne is survived by her husband, Stanley Hofwolt of Mitchell, SD; daughters, Anna (Steven) Nussbaum of Plankinton SD, Sara Hofwolt of Sioux Falls, SD; sons, Anthony and Alexander Bear Robe – Hofwolt of Mitchell, SD and William Hofwolt of Sioux Falls, SD; 3 grandchildren, Paige, Ivan, August Nussbaum of Plankinton, SD; sisters, Betty Christensen, Nancy Kirchmeirer, and Diana Wick all of Mitchell, SD; brothers, David Adams of Everett, WA, Gary Adams of Puerto Vallarta, Mexico; along with many nieces, nephews, cousins, and other relatives grateful to have shared her life.

She is preceded in death by her parents, Ray E. & Anna N. (Wranek) Adams; brothers, Clarence, Arthur, Kenneth Adams; sisters, Alta (Melvin) Gering and Esther (Donald) Underwood.
