Lavon Lau, 94, of Omaha, NE formerly of Mitchell, died Wednesday, April 29, 2020 in Omaha. A private, family funeral service will be held due to current COVID-19 conditions. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery in Mitchell. Memorials may be directed to Quality Living, Inc. Omaha. Arrangements by Bittner Funeral Chapel.
Lavon was born on March 7, 1926 to John and Gertrude (Bowling) Bucknell near Alexandria, SD. She graduated from Alexandria High School in 1943, and moved to Mitchell. In Mitchell she was a bookkeeper in a men’s clothing store before moving to California with her sister. While in California Lavon worked as a cashier in a women’s ready to wear store. After returning to SD, she was employed at the Davison County ASC office as sec-treas. until the time of her marriage.
Lavon married Alvin Lau on December 3, 1947. They spent the first year of their marriage in Columbus, NE before returning to Mitchell. While in Nebraska she was employed as a bookkeeper and cashier at a women’s clothing store. After returning to Mitchell, Lavon was employed at United Way, Drs Boyden & Kappenman, and was working for the SD Health Dept when they moved to Madison, SD. She also lived in Aberdeen and Huron with her husband prior to returning to Mitchell in 1994. They moved to Omaha, NE in December 2007 to be with their children. They lived at Bloomfield Forum Retirement Apartments until Alvin passed away on May 14, 2013. Lavon lived there two more years alone, and then moved to Bickford Cottage Assisted Living for more help due to her dementia. After a fall, she moved to a new section of Bickford called Mary B’s for more assistance. Due to a severe gall bladder attack in December of 2019, Lavon moved to Rose Blumkin, a skilled facility, for rehab, and then stayed as a resident until her passing.
She had been a member of Holy Spirit Catholic Church in Mitchell, and was a member of St. Leo Catholic Church of Omaha.
Lavon is survived by her daughter, Sandy (George) Knockenhauer of Omaha, NE; grandson, Michael (Shelby) Knockenhauer of Omaha, NE; great-granchildren Michael Jr., Jack, and Moxie Jane.
She is preceded in death by her husband, Alvin; son, Douglas; and siblings, Genevieve Fox, Lucy Shultz, Mardella Turner, Marcella Bennett, Robert Bucknell, and Baby Joseph Bucknell.
