Obituary

Donald Schabot, 80, of Mitchell formerly of Stickney died, Thursday, March 12, 2020 at Avera Queen of Peace Hospital in Mitchell.  Funeral services will be 10:30 AM Tuesday, March 17, at St. John's Catholic Church in Plankinton.  Burial will be in Mizpah Cemetery in Plankinton.  Visitation will be from 5-7:00 PM Monday at Bittner Funeral Chapel in Mitchell.

Donald Lawrence Schabot was born February 21, 1940, to Lawrence and Mary (Samp) Schabot. He grew up on the family farm near Plankinton, with his older sister Catherine and younger sister Margaret. Don made his living driving nearly every kind of truck ever made.

He married the love of his life, Carol (Schroeder). They raised two daughters together, Deidre and Doralea, and later on adopted and raised a granddaughter, Jocinda. Together, they raised a number of other children, as their door was always open to anyone who needed a temporary parent or home.

Don was an avid hunter and, later on, fisherman. He tried trapping for a few years, and caught many farm cats and skunks, and once, a baby fox. He would often not shoot perfectly good deer if he saw them too early in the season as then he wouldn’t be able to keep hunting that year.

He is survived by his wife, Carol; his daughters, Deidre, Doralea, and Jocinda; several grandchildren and great grandchildren; and two sisters. He will be dearly missed by all who were lucky enough to share his life.
