Obituary

Fern M. Kunkel, 93, of Mitchell, SD, died Thursday, November 7, 2019 at Firesteel Healthcare Center in Mitchell.

Funeral Mass will be 10:30 AM Monday, November 11, 2019 at Holy Spirit Catholic Church in Mitchell. Burial will be at Church of The Epiphany Catholic Cemetery in Epiphany, SD. Visitation will be from 3-5:00 PM Sunday at Bittner Funeral Chapel with a 4:30 PM Prayer Service.

Fern M. Kunkel was born on October 22nd, 1926 to Art and Millie (Robinson) Koepke in McCook County, Spencer, SD.  She attended Pearl Township school   and then attended Spencer High School. On October 26th, 1943 she married Henry Kunkel. They farmed on his homeplace until retiring in 1977 when they moved a mile south. Fern was a true farmer’s wife, doing chores and helping with farm work. Fern and Hank spent many winters in Texas and AZ.  They liked to travel and visited many places. Summers were spent camping and fishing with friends and family

She is survived by her children, Lavone Zachery, Mitchell, SD, Richard (Carol) Kunkel, Spencer, SD, Cheryl Loveall, Toledo, OR, Gary (Julie) Kunkel, Mitchell, SD, and Dale (Gingar) Kunkel, Plankinton, SD; 13 grandchildren and numerous great-grandchildren; and sisters-in-law, Pat Koepke and Ann Kunkel.

She was preceded in death by her husband; son, Curtis Kunkel; three sister, Phyllis Reifers, Evelyn Schneider, and Delores Tentinger; and brother, Jim Koepke.

Our sincere condolences to all in your family. Fern and Hank both were always helpful in so many ways. Fern would pick up Ramona for the Happy Mothers Club meetings so often. She added cheer in the nursing home, too. May God's reward be great.

I Love you so much Grandma... you will be missed very dearly. I will never forget you. Your Cream Peas will always be my favorite!! RIP.
